Landforce is hiring Seasonal Crew Members

Position description:

A Landforce Crew is a team who works closely together to create important, positive change in the parks and green places in Allegheny County. Our crews are fun and productive, and they work hard to complete each project. When you’re a part of a Landforce Crew, you will have a lot to be proud of, and your work will have a lasting impact as you give back to Pittsburgh and neighboring communities.

Responsibilities include: Use hand tools and mechanical tools, work alongside other crew members to meet and exceed expectations on land stewardship contracts. This may include: trail construction including traditional earth moving as well as stone work and simple carpentry; habitat restoration including vine removal, plant removal, planting, and plant maintenance; vacant lot management including the removal of dumped goods, overgrown vegetation, planting, plant maintenance and basic construction; tree planting, watering, pruning, and mulching; garden installation including fence and garden bed construction; green infrastructure installation and maintenance including the construction of below ground infrastructure, planting, plant maintenance, weeding, etc. general landscaping including weeding, mulching, pruning, cutting grass, and removing garbage; other land stewardship projects as they arise; participation in community-based work as assigned by Site Supervisor or Program Manager. Actively participate in hard and soft skills trainings to build knowledge in all above subjects, construction techniques, financial management, work ethic, how to be an ideal employee, problem-solving, and teamwork techniques. Work closely with the Workforce Development staff to establish career goals, complete all assigned tasks to meet these goals, attend and participate in career exploration seminars, job searches, and additional trainings to further professional and personal growth. Become an effective and reliable member of the Landforce team, communicating effectively with team members, participating in team-centered events, and engaging professionally with all Landforce clients and staff. Attend weekly team meetings with Landforce staff to address questions and issues as they arise. Complete all necessary Landforce paperwork and documents as instructed by Site Supervisor. Adhere to organization policy, procedures and the professional code of ethics. Perform other assigned duties as required for the success of the organization.

Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD) is hiring a Program Associate (Apply by February 7, 2025)

Position description: Working closely with the RAD team, the Program Associate serves as the liaison for regional assets and interested applicants. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, collaborative, deliberative, and congenial, with well-developed writing, communication, analytical, and organizational skills. This position entails independent and team work, and requires, above all, flexibility, precision, patience, efficiency, discretion, and a good sense of humor. The ability to review, summarize, and communicate (both orally and in writing) complex non-profit funding requests are hallmarks of this position.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working with Applicants

    • Respond in a timely and respectful manner to inquiries from current and potential grantees.

    • Provide support to current and potential grantees, ensuring eligibility, application, and reporting protocols are understood and executed.

    • Participate in site visits and meetings to discuss and evaluate funding for prospective/current projects.

    • Participate in grantees’ public presentations on programs, including attendance at funded organizations’ board meetings as assigned.

    • Provide technical assistance to applicants as needed.

  • Reviews & Recommendations

    • Review, analyze and summarize funding requests in writing.

    • Review and approve payment request forms and supporting documentation for eligible costs within established program guidelines.

    • Review audits for compliance and initiate appropriate corrective action if needed.

    • Review and recommend revisions/updates to program guidelines, materials, processes, and procedures.

    • Make initial recommendations on program applications for eligibility under established guidelines.

Rural Action is hiring an Environmental Education Program Director (Apply by February 14, 2025)

Position description: Rural Action’s Environmental Education (EE) Program Director is responsible for overall funding, development, management, and day-to-day functioning of the EE program and its projects. The program has an established and growing body of work including classroom presentations, field trips, citizen science projects, outdoor behavioral healthcare, youth leadership development, high school internships, summer camps, and Appalachian Understories (a social enterprise led by the program).

Key duties for this position include grant writing and other fundraising, personnel management, oversight and implementation of project activities and grant deliverables, and administrative support/reporting. The director is also responsible for new project development, problem solving with team members, developing program strategies with the Chief Program Officer and Rural Action’s Leadership Team, managing partner relations and communications, and communicating decisions and needs to the CPO. The director is expected to communicate directly with the CPO to problem solve and communicate program activities, successes, or roadblocks. It should also be noted that national service members make up a large portion of the overall EE team through Rural Action’s AmeriCorps Program; another key duty of the position is ongoing recruitment, hiring, training, and support of these members (along with the EE Program Manager and AmeriCorps Staff).

LEAF Project is hiring Multiple Youth Crew Members

Position description: Every summer, LEAF seeks motivated and talented youth leaders to hire for our summer job. LEAF cultivates youth leaders from diverse backgrounds through meaningful work in the food system.

This job combines meaningful work alongside farmers and chefs, leadership development, and engaging workshops to create a dynamic summer job. The LEAF summer work is an opportunity to:

  • work alongside peers from Cumberland, Dauphin, and Perry County

  • explore and identify what your unique talents are

  • focus on an area of interest - agriculture, culinary, and public outreach

  • develop your skills as a peer leader

Key responsibilities include: Every week, you will spend time growing vegetables, understanding the food system, learning cooking skills, and developing leadership skills. Each day, we will check in as a group, have a morning work session, engage with each other at lunch, participate in an afternoon workshop, and work alongside each other for an afternoon work session. Every day at LEAF is a little bit different and you will be consistently learning and building new skills, learning more about yourself and your peers, and learning about the food system. LEAF Project is hiring a Youth Crew Leader

Position description: The Crew Leader is at the heart of what makes LEAF work. This summer position (June-August) involves supporting and mentoring youth crew members.

Appalachian Voices is hiring a Summer Economic Development Research Intern

Position Description: Appalachian Voices is seeking an Economic Development Research Intern for the summer of 2025 (anticipated May through August).

Federal investments including those from the Inflation Reduction Act, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, annual appropriations bills, the Farm Bill, and more are making their way to disadvantaged communities in Appalachia. The intern should be interested in learning about federal funding programs and how community-based organizations, businesses, and local governments use these funds for local projects and investments.
