Appalachian Voices is hiring an Appalachian Solar Finance Fund Program Coordinator

West Virginia Rivers Coalition is hiring a Senior Scientist

Position description: The Senior Scientist is a versatile full-time position established to provide technical expertise that furthers the goals of the Citizen Oversight and Regulatory Advisory program and addresses other water policy issues in collaboration with local grassroots watershed organizations, government agencies, public water utilities, and other community partners. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in conducting research and analysis to advance clean water priorities through collaboration with a variety of partners. Candidates must be highly organized yet adaptable, able to work remotely, and enthusiastic about joining a medium-sized statewide advocacy organization in a pivotal period of growth. This is a remote working position focused on projects throughout the state of West Virginia.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Coordinate our Citizen Oversight and Regulatory Advisory program, which includes managing the WV Water Quality Monitoring Program and leading regulatory oversight and compliance.

  • Provide technical assistance to volunteer water quality monitors and concerned citizens.

  • Conduct and/or coordinate issue-based research of regulations, policies and proposed permits.

East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Wildlife Field Tech (Meadville)

Position description: East Stroudsburg University is hiring a Grant Funded Wildlife Field Technician! This position is specifically for Northwest Pennsylvania at field research sites located in Mercer and Crawford County.

As the Grant Funded Wildlife Field Technician, you will need to think creatively and be comfortable trapping and tagging, collecting biological samples, conducting tick drags, and assisting with laboratory tests. You will be an active member of the Dr. Jane Huffman Wildlife Genetics team and will work closely with the Director of the Wildlife DNA Lab to trap, handle, and sample from live small mammals while adhering to research methodologies and IACUC approved protocols. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your wildlife observation and lab testing experience while maintaining records of research. To be successful in this role, you must have wildlife fieldwork experience, detailed knowledge on lab testing, and the ability to generate reports for review.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible adherence to field safety procedures is essential, carry out IACUC protocols for handling small mammals and conducting sampling from small mammals which will include retro-orbital eye bleeds.

  • Identify small mammal habitat in various environments and, set and bait live traps, apply approved pesticides at designated sites using a backpack prayer and mist blower under the direction of a certified pesticide applicator.

  • Identify ticks morphologically to separate, log and store ticks for future DNA analysis of tickborne pathogens and conduct tick drags to quantify tick densities at each study site.

    Collect, document, and store all samples using electronic notebooks and following standards of practice.

  • Assist with carrying out tests using scientific techniques, such as DNA extractions, polymerase chain reaction, genotyping, genetic sequencing, and gel electrophoresis, deploy interventions at designated sites and conduct weekly inspections.

  • Collaborate with Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Health, and local Vector Control agencies and local Colleges and Universities, along with the community on the research goals and objectives.

  • Conduct any needed public outreach to landowners or school districts on approval and access to study sites.

Venture Outdoors is hiring a Director of Youth Education

Position description: The Director of Youth Education reports to the President/CEO and supports the organization by managing all programming aimed at ages 0-18 years, ensuring quality programming that not only encourages outdoor experiences but physical, mental, and educational impact. The Director will lead all hiring activities within the youth department, which consists of three full-time employees and up to 40 part-time/seasonal employees. The youth department executes 500+ trips annually, serving over 10,000 youth. The director will be responsible for managing $100K-$200K in grant programs and over $200K in contract/fee-for-service revenue every year.

The following are responsibilities that have been initially defined; however, flexibility, positivity and a willingness to participate in the development of the department is needed to succeed in this position.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead development of a 5-year business plan for youth programming, examining market opportunity locally, regionally and nationally.

  • Lead the implementation of the youth program business plan.

  • Lead all hiring activities under the youth department.

  • Manage youth programming staff including three full-time staff members and up to 40 part-time/seasonal Outdoor Educators, ensuring quality implementation of youth programming and associated trips.

Venture Outdoors is hiring a Fishing Program Manager

Position description: The Fishing Program Manager reports to the Director of Youth Education and supports the organization by managing and facilitating fishing and kayaking programs through the Pittsburgh’s First Catch Center. The Fishing Program Manager will directly supervise the Fishing Program Coordinator. This position is a full-time role, supported by the R3 Education Grant Program administered by PA Fish & Boat Commission through a grant awarded by the Richard King Mellon Foundation.

Many of these programs are youth and family focused, so an ideal candidate would have experience and be comfortable working with groups of youth. This position requires a mix of office, field and remote work. Field work consists of 20-30% of the role November through March, 50-60% April-Sep-Oct, and 70-80% May-August. The anticipated start date for this role will be August/September 2024.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manage the Pittsburgh First Catch program, which will conduct fishing and boating experiences in under-represented communities

  • Execute 150+ fishing and kayaking experiences at Venture Outdoors’ concessions/facilities and in pop-up locations throughout the greater Pittsburgh region throughout the 18-month period

  • Work collaboratively with the PA Fish & Boat Commission to successfully lift and operate the Pittsburgh First Catch Program

Hilltop Urban Farm is hiring a Farmer Incubator Program Manager

Position description: The Farmer Incubator Program (FIP) at Hilltop Urban Farm is a 4–7-year program for new organic urban farm enterprises. For an annual program participation fee, participants receive access to rehabilitated urban farmland, secure storage, hoop houses, walk-in coolers and a tool library. Through farming experience and with the support of the Farmer Incubator Manager, participants will learn growing techniques and farm business management skills. Program participants gain exposure to the local and regional food systems by participating in educational programs and networking events hosted by HUF and partner organizations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the ongoing development and administration of the Farmer Incubator Program, including:

  • Plan and manage FIP monthly meetings;

  • Serve as key point of contact for all Incubator farmers;

  • Make regular formal and informal farm plot check-ins with participants;

  • Advise on growing strategies, integrated pest management (IPM), post-harvest activities, marketing channels, and business management tools; 

  • Orchestrate ordering and delivery of all bulk materials for all FIP participants, such as compost/wood chips;

  • Work closely with HUF bookkeeper to manage FIP lease payments and utility bills;

  • Train FIP participants on safe equipment use and monitor for competency and compliance.

  • Connect Farmer Incubator Participants to resources and training opportunities that support their individual businesses and farm operations through partner organizations, workshops, conferences, etc.

  • Coordinate/develop business planning and accounting training for Incubators to support and strengthen their business and entrepreneurship skills.

  • Actively participate in weekly HUF Staff Meetings, HUF Technical Advisory Meetings, monthly HUF Board Meetings, Food Policy Council Meetings, and other internal and external meetings as assigned or appropriate.

  • Assist with maintaining various areas of farm property and equipment.

  • Perform regular equipment inspections and maintenance, changing fluids and filters, and parts, as necessary.

  • Assist with all assigned aspects of maintaining farm equipment, solar, tools, and machinery. Responsibilities include cleaning tools, organizing tools/supplies, coordinate tool sharpening, general routine small engine maintenance and repair, cleaning machinery and tracking inventory of necessary farm supplies.

Position description: The Institutional Partnerships Manager is responsible for maximizing philanthropic giving from corporate, government, and foundation partners in support of the mission and work of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy (PPC). Reporting to the Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer, the Institutional Partnerships Manager will cultivate and steward relationships with a portfolio of regional and national corporations, government agencies, and professional foundations to secure funding for various strategic projects and priorities at the organization. The Institutional Partnerships Manager will identify, research, cultivate, and solicit grants, while also helping to write proposals and reports in collaboration with program staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage and grow a portfolio of institutional funders, including professional foundations, public agencies, corporate funders, and community organizations in order to meet annual goals in support of the organization's programs and initiatives.

  • Conduct prospect research and create an annual plan that aligns funding opportunities with key organizational needs.

  • Implement customized stewardship and engagement strategies for institutional funders that demonstrates the impact of their philanthropic support.

  • Manage the development of compelling presentations and pitch materials for requests of various sizes.

  • Lead, either independently or with a team of cross-departmental staff, the development of grant proposals, budgets, reports, and other supplemental materials.
