EarthJustice is hiring for their Spring 2025 Science Internship – Fossil Fuels Team Apply by September 11th

Position description: Earthjustice’s Fossil Fuels Team is accepting applications for one part-time science intern for spring 2025. This is a paid position. We are seeking graduate students who share a passion for health, justice, and the environment. The successful candidate may work remotely from the U.S. or on a hybrid schedule from one of Earthjustice’s offices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Summarize research findings relevant to Earthjustice advocacy in writing, including helpful tables and figures (e.g., plots, maps, and diagrams).

  • Review, analyze, and summarize regulations, environmental planning documents, technical support documents, and other scientific and technical information to support litigation and advocacy.

  • Organize scientific information for use by lawyers.

  • Draft, fact-check, and summarize scientific and technical information in fact sheets, press releases, blogs, news articles, slides, reports, and other materials for internal use or external use with clients, coalitions, the media, and others.

  • Research potential technical experts to contribute to legal cases.

Breathe Project is hiring a Digital Media/ Communications Intern

Position description: Breathe Project is seeking a digital media intern to assist with communications, writing and social media work, including sharing stories about the work of Breathe Collaborative organizations. Good writing skills, social media experience and photography skills a plus. The digital media intern will work with the Director of Communications and Communications Manager to develop a variety of digital media campaigns using infographics, photography, short videos and other tools to share through multiple outlets.

Appalachian Voice is hiring a Community Outreach Coordinator

Position description: Appalachian Voices is seeking a Community Outreach Coordinator to join our fast-paced, dynamic team. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) for an initial four-year period, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability. This is a remote position based in West Virginia, with frequent travel within West Virginia, and some travel outside of West Virginia.

This position will support Appalachian Voices participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region III Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center (TCTAC) to advance our goals related to community and environmental revitalization efforts in Central Appalachia. Additionally, this position will support community development and environmental protection efforts in West Virginia and Southwest Virginia.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Represent Appalachian Voices in regional TCTAC meetings and events, collaborating with universities, government officials, and other nonprofits to develop resources and plan events.

  • Identify environmental justice community organizations and stakeholders that can benefit from technical assistance.

  • Conduct outreach and engagement with disadvantaged community leaders, and assist community leaders with the TCTAC intake process.

  • In coordination with TCTAC partners, design and implement workshops, trainings, webinars, toolkits, handouts, factsheets, and websites to help environmental justice communities build capacity to address their community needs.

  • Participate in team activities, train-the-trainer sessions, peer-to-peer learning sessions, and community organizing trainings to build Appalachian Voices capacity.

  • Plan and host events in West Virginia and support events in Southwest Virginia to help environmental justice communities build capacity to identify, assess, and address their environmental and economic issues.

  • Track and understand federal and state funding and technical assistance opportunities that can support community and environmental revitalization efforts.

  • Connect community members and stakeholders engagement in processes to improve projects that impact their communities, such as community benefit development processes or government public input opportunities.

  • Support on-site community pollution monitoring activities.

Greenlight America is hiring a Clean Energy Organizer

The Clean Energy Organizer, Pennsylvania will support Greenlight America’s campaigns for clean energy in Pennsylvania, including utility-scale solar siting. They will engage local communities, mobilize volunteers, and work with partner organizations to build grassroots support for clean energy projects. A successful candidate for this position will have a background in community organizing, excellent communication skills, and a passion for clean energy. They should be eager to learn and approach challenges with flexibility and creativity. The position is remote and reports to the Senior Regional Campaign Manager, Northeast.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engage local communities to support campaigns for clean energy projects in Pennsylvania.

  • Mobilize volunteers and collaborate with local partner organizations to build grassroots support for clean energy projects.

  • Assist in developing and implementing campaign plans, including setting goals, strategies, and tactical timelines.

  • Use quantitative and qualitative data to track progress towards organizing goals. Support the coalition in refining the strategy and tactics on the ground based on this data.

  • Track campaign milestones and identify opportunities for community engagement.

  • Provide support to volunteer leaders through regular check-ins, training sessions, and advocacy materials.

  • Build and maintain relationships with partner organizations, including environmental, labor, faith, social justice, and business groups.

    Host community events, town halls, and workshops to educate the public about clean energy initiatives and encourage community participation.

  • Organize and participate in outreach activities such as door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and tabling at local events to build awareness and support for clean energy projects.

  • Create and manage local volunteer groups, including recruitment, training, and retention strategies to ensure a strong and active volunteer base for campaign activities.

  • Travel frequently to rural areas around Pennsylvania is expected.

PA Department of Environmental Protection is hiring an Environmental Protection Compliance Specialist

Position description: The Environmental Protection Compliance Specialist performs a variety of professional duties, within an assigned geographic area of an Environmental Protection Region in an environmental specialty, to insure compliance with Commonwealth rules and regulations governing environmental protection. Work involves preparing violation letters, Departmental Orders, and Consent Orders/Agreements; preparing documentation for use in the prosecution of cases; prosecuting cases; conducting enforcement conferences and administrative hearings; negotiating settlements of cases; and negotiating penalties. Work also includes reviewing a variety of enforcement documentation and recommendations made by field personnel and determining priorities. Work includes assisting field personnel in resolving problems involving enforcement of cases, providing advice on rules and regulations to field personnel, reviewing case data with field personnel to determine appropriate enforcement action, notifying field personnel of enforcement action to be taken, and against whom. Work includes training field personnel on how to prosecute cases, documentation techniques for enforcement cases, procedures and techniques for determining penalties and negotiating settlements, and the interpretation and application of environmental protection rules and regulations. Work involves preparing news releases, providing information to reporters regarding enforcement cases, and providing information to facility operators, municipal officials, consultants, and the public on Department programs, functions, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Work is assigned in the form of goals and objectives and the employee exercises considerable freedom in planning, scheduling, and completing the work. Work is reviewed upon completion by a professional supervisor for completeness, technical accuracy and quality.

  • Prepares non-traffic citation forms, files with District Magistrate, and prosecutes case on behalf of the Commonwealth, presenting data and examining and cross examining witnesses; recommends imposition of fines to District Magistrates.

  • Researches case files and case history and prepares documentation for use in the prosecution of cases by filed personnel or legal staff. Contacts legal staff and discusses enforcement cases, seeks clarification on rules and regulations from legal staff.

  • Assists and provides advice to field personnel on the enforcement of unusual or difficult cases, reviews enforcement recommendation of field personnel and recommends appropriate action to field personnel.

  • Reviews Departmental Orders, Consent Orders/Agreements, and violation letters prepared by field personnel for content, completeness, technical accuracy, and legal terminology; corrects errors and makes changes or recommendations; approves or disapproves Departmental Orders, Consent Orders/ Agreements, and violation letters. Notifies field personnel of major enforcement action to be taken and against which facilities action should be taken.

  • Conducts evaluation of the enforcement program within an assigned area and prepares a report of recommendations based on the evaluation.

Staunton Farm Foundation is hiring an Executive Director - Apply by September 9th

Position description: The Foundation seeks an experienced leader with a deep knowledge and passion for the behavioral health and substance use space. Accountable to a Board of Directors of family and community members, the Executive Director is expected to shape and manage the strategic direction of the Foundation by providing leadership and guidance, facilitating change, and cultivating partnerships and alliances to promote growth and awareness with grantees and the community at large.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assuring the Foundation effectively achieves its mission by providing leadership and development innovation. This includes day-to-day operations, fiscal oversight, and strategic planning.

  • Supervising ongoing evaluation of Foundation activities to ensure continued adherence to the organizational mission and effectiveness.

  • Assessing the effectiveness of Foundation giving priorities through measurable, objective, and quantitative evidence and sharing data with the Board and other appropriate stakeholders.
